Emily Carter of Darien died Sunday, Jan. 31, at Stamford Hospital after a five-week battle with pneumonia. She was the wife of the late Attorney Aubrey James Carter . She was 92.

Entertainment In Harlow – You Might Be Surprised?

Based only 25 miles from London and with great access from the M11 motorway, Harlow is a great place to catch the latest films, experience local theatre and dance, or enjoy live music at some superb venues. Covering the whole entertainment spectrum from international musical superstars all the way through to the traditional pantomime and fireworks display, the town of Harlow in Essex has something for all ages and tastes.

The jewel in the crown in the Harlow Playhouse, which opened almost 40 years with a Gala Show starring Lulu. Now an integral part of Harlow life, the Playhouse has become predominantly a venue for touring shows, especially childrens entertainment, dance, musical tribute acts, comedy, drama and musicals. The most popular show is the annual Harlow Pantomime which is held over the Christmas period and is always a fantastic treat for all the family.

In addition to the Playhouse, there are other fantastic live music venues in Harlow. The Square in Fourth Avenue mainly offers a platform for up and coming bands to perform in front of a live audience. However, you never know who is going to appear on stage, maybe the Lambrettas or even the Blockheads, to name but two. There is no dress code in force and everyone is welcome.

The other main venue for music is Marigolds, based at the Harlow Cricket Club in Old Harlow. Famous mainly for its Jazz and Rhythm & Blues sessions, Marigolds always provides great music with the audience going away happy and thoroughly entertained. With gigs nearly every week, there is always something to be enjoyed at this friendly venue.

Cinema is also a popular form of entertainment in Harlow. Since the Odeon closed down in the town centre several years, movie goers now have to make the short journey to the Queensgate Centre where Cineworld is based. Comprising of 6 screens, one with 3D capabilities, Cineworld provides comfortable surroundings, disabled access, and a coffee shop, whilst showing all the latest films and blockbusters. They also still offer the traditional Saturday morning movies for kids, with an admission charge of just £1 for children & adults. How great is that?

If you love sports, then Harlow has a vast choice to offer. Whilst the soccer team is unfortunately struggling in the lower echelons of non-league football, the local basketball team, the Hawks, continue to go from strength to strength. The town also boasts its very own Greyhound track, based at the Pinnacles, which offers a great night out for the seasoned punter or the whole family alike.

There is also a much needed new sports centre due to open in Spring 2010. This will provide local people with state of the art sporting facilities and finally, after the last one was allowed to become derelict, their own swimming pool. These modern facilities will also be available to competitors from all over the world during the 2012 Olympics, who will be based in the Harlow area and wish to train in readiness for their event.
