Jazz Trumpet Range

The Magic of The Trombone
The trombone is a unique brass instrument which is characterized by the telescopic slide through which the musician varies the length of the tube to change the pitch of the note. The valve trombone as three vowels just like a trumpet and the word trombone literally means "large trumpet". Indeed, the two instruments are closely linked and have the same characteristic of a cylindrical bore.
The instrument was first devised in the 15th century and since that time the characteristics of the trombone have developed and evolved.
The trombone has a range of over two octaves and the player has to learn how to control the slide in order to hit each of the notes within the octaves. In addition to this, the trombone player needs to learn how to control their lips in order to gain the right airflow required for each note.
The two most popular trombones are the Bass and the Tenor and you'll usually see at least one of these in a full-sized orchestra. In addition to these, there is also the alto trombone, treble trombone and a double bass trombone.
Trombones are important instruments in both orchestras and bands and especially in jazz arrangements. Trombones sound particularly effective in orchestras playing harmonies. However, they can still so used to play great solos.
The trombone slide gives it the unique ability to create an effect known as "tailgate trombone" where the instrument literally swoops between two notes. No other instrument can achieve this quite so effectively.
The tuning slide of the trombone allows players to hit what are known as "blue notes", a sound often associated with blues and Jazz Music.
The trombone is at the heart of any big band and in some cases has become so familiar it almost goes unnoticed to the untrained ear.
