Phuket Simon Cabaret
The Phuket Simon Cabaret is an unusual cabaret show. It is one of the biggest transvestite shows on the island. The famous “ladyboys” (men, dressed as women) of Thailand are the main participants of this show. They have to undergo rigorous training to enhance their posture stamina and tone their bodies like women. They also inject hormones and undergo other cosmetic enhancements on their bodies to look, sound and behave like women. After a considerable length of time they do ultimately become women.
The show is a spectacular display of colour, originality and fun. Phuket’s Simon Cabaret has become one of Southeast Asia’s outstanding entertainment attractions drawing a thousand enthused visitors from around the world each evening.
A single show is an effervescent mixture of culture and music from around the world. Extravagant costumes, make-up and sets take the audience from Egypt to Latin America to China and back to Thailand in themed displays of classical dance and song.
For good entertainment value and international appeal the “actresses” are dressed like Tina turner or Diana Ross. It’s some of the most flamboyant fun you’ll ever witness. The majorities of the actors were born in male bodies but are living life as beautiful young women who express their talent through life as a cabaret performer.
Simon Cabaret is a big operation with more than 100 backstage staff including show managers, costume and wardrobe departments and a control manager that ensures everything works according to a tight schedule as it should. The performers have a very demanding life. They have to learn each and every role in every musical number. This is done to replace an actress who might be sick or on leave on a vacation.
The cabaret has been held every day of the year for the past 18 years. There are two shows every night. The Simon cabaret has not performed only when King Bhumibol’s mother, the Queen Mother, passed away on the evening of the 2004 tsunami.
The performers spend hours in front of the mirror to do their make up every day which also includes costume fittings. They have to learn to carry those magnificent and enormous costumes with perfect balance on heels, that too with a smile on their faces every night.
Most of the actresses have been performing on stage from the very beginning, i.e. for nearly 18 years. The dancers are taught traditional ballet, jazz and contemporary dance. They lead a very hard and disciplined life as they have to exercise, train and use both cosmetic and surgical enhancements to make them keep looking young and feminine.
The first show usually starts at 19.30 and the second at 21.30. The crowd consists of guests from around the world who come to witness this unique and spectacular event.
The Simon Group commenced operations in Phuket in 1991. The group interests are associated with meeting the demands of Phuket's ever-expanding tourism and entertainment industry.
Simon Cabaret is in every tour operator’s itinerary. While booking your accommodation search for hotels that arrange for a tour to the Simon cabaret. Judging its popularity it won’t be hard for to find numerous websites and travel agents offering to take you to the Simon cabaret. Avail of special discounts on your hotel bookings and sightseeing.
