Film Festivals In Geneva
Switzerland's capital Geneva is host to a wide range of arts and culture events throughout the year, and with some of the most prestigious film festivals taking place in Europe, February looks to be no exception for visitors travelling to the global city.
Film festivals look set to dominate this month, with venues across Geneva playing host to a wide range of specialist events. Geneva Tourism reports that February has been singled out as 'the month of the documentary film,' with this year's theme being the biodiversity of nature. A dozen films analysing the flora and fauna of the world are aimed at experts and casual viewers alike, playing free of charge at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle until 28 February.
The scientific theme continues with the CineGlobe International Scientific Short Film Festival, which takes place from 16 to 20 February at the world-famous CERN laboratory and Geneva's Forum Meyrin. This festival is not exclusively the domain of science buffs however, with three distinct competitions being staged for general fiction, science or scientific fiction and science documentary, ensuring a broad palette for film fans.
On a different subject altogether is the city's 19th Black Movie Festival, showcasing Asian, African and Latin-American films concerned with current affair topics. The parallel Black Movie for Kids Film Festival offers food for thought to younger audiences, aged between two and 12 years of age, and runs until 21 February at Maison des Arts du Grütli.
Beyond film events, there are many festivities taking place concurrently that can make a trip to Geneva appealing for fans of the arts this month. 2010 sees the centenary celebrations of Geneva's Musée d'art et d'histoire, with events aimed at the whole family - from a giant treasure hunt for children to music concerts and exclusive tours. Jazz lovers can also embrace their passion at the Vernier Jazz 2010 festival, which this year celebrates the 100th anniversary of legendary musician Django Reinhardt's birth. The city is even hosting its 11th International Cat Fair for feline lovers across the globe at the end of the month.
Geneva is a uniquely multicultural city, and the diverse calendar of events taking place across the month reflects its international status. From traditional circuses to libretto operas and a benefit concert in aid of Haiti on 24 February, film, music and theatre lovers of all persuasions are sure to find something to enjoy when taking Geneva flights in 2010.
